Claire Woof kindly introduces us to Horsforth St Margaret’s, a 9-a-side outfit from West Riding that is a social team but always looking to improve.

SK: How has 2024/2025 season gone for you so far (what league are you in) and who are your biggest rivals?

HSM: The 2024/25 season has been an exciting one for us! We have been competing against some fantastic teams and we’ve been really focused on improving our performance and pushing for higher placements in the development division of the Harrogate League this year. As for rivals, while some might view certain teams as our biggest competitors, we don’t necessarily see them that way. We are more focused on our own growth and development than on rivalry. Of course, matches against some teams do get a bit more competitive but at the end of the day, we’re all just looking to make our mark and challenge for the top spots.

SK: When did the team form?

HSM: Our team was formed in 2021 by Ali Hodgson, who wanted to create a space where women could come together, enjoy the social aspects of team sport and feel included, no matter their background or experience level. We still hold on to that original vision, having fun while competing, and making sure everyone feels valued and part of the team.

SK: Do you have a fairly settled team?

HSM: Since our formation, we’ve been able to maintain a strong core group of players who know each other well and understand how to work together on the pitch. While we’re always open to new faces and fresh talent, having that stability has really helped us improve and grow as a unit. Everyone knows their role and there’s a strong sense of trust and camaraderie within the squad.

SK: What league and/or cup do you play in and do you have to travel far for your matches?

HSM: We play in a 9v9 league, which takes place on Sundays at a variety of venues, including Prince Henry’s School in Otley. As for travel, it’s not too far but we do have a bit of variety in where we play, which adds a nice change of scenery for each match. In addition to our league games, we’ve had some exciting cup runs this season. We’ve just qualified for the WBL Cup final, which will be held at Fleet Lane in April and we’re really looking forward to that! We’ve also progressed to the next round of another cup after a fantastic 7-3 win in our recent match. It’s been a great season so far, with plenty of action on both the league and cup fronts!

SK: Who are the team’s jokers?

HSM: We definitely have a few jokers on the team. Recently we introduced a fine system for players who do ridiculous things and it’s been a lot of fun. For example, we had a player who brought two left boots to a game, definitely a fine-worthy moment. One of the funniest things is when players turn up wearing Crocs – surely that’s a joke and huge fine in itself!

SK: Who is the LOUDEST on the team?

HSM: There are definitely a few team members who don’t need a microphone – whether it’s for karaoke or on the pitch! We have a couple of players who are always vocal, making sure everyone’s motivated and fired up. They take no prisoners, but it’s all in good spirit and always with the goal of keeping the energy high and the team focused.

SK: Does the team have an unsung hero that you want to thank?

HSM: First and foremost there’s Ali, who set up the team and continues to support us whenever she can. She’s always there to lend a hand and comes to watch when she can and we’re so grateful for her dedication. Then there’s our captain, Charlie, who does so much behind the scenes. She makes sure the refs are paid, organizes the player of the match awards and brings a sense of calm to the team.
