The Hornets were interested in the midfielder back in January but a move never came to fruition. However, he is out of contract in the summer.

Watford FC's 2024/25 campaign is all but over, as the gap to the top six grew to seven points following Coventry City's 1-1 draw against Hull City on Monday evening.

With just four games to go, they need a miracle to end the season in the play-off places, and it looks almost certain that the Hornets will be playing Championship football once again in 2025/26.

Inconsistency has plagued Tom Cleverley's side over the course of the last eight months, with their form on the road denying them an opportunity at returning to the Premier League after three years away from the top flight.

Nevertheless, this does allow Watford to start planning for next season early, and with improvements needed to the squad, their manager does have a relatively large task on his hands to add to his team in the summer. However, one player who was a previous target should be back on their shortlist.

Watford must try once again for Hector Kyprianou in the summer

The Hornets were interested in Peterborough United's Hector Kyprianou back in the January transfer window, with the Posh's owner, Darragh MacAnthony, reportedly stating that his club had rejected a bid for the midfielder from the Championship outfit on deadline day.

Football League World exclusively revealed at the start of the window that both Cardiff City and Plymouth Argyle had the Cyprus international on their radar, but a move never came to fruition for either side.

Despite this, the 23-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, and as he is turning 24 in May, no compensation will have to be paid if he decides to depart from the Weston Homes Stadium.

This makes a deal incredibly enticing for Watford, and they must take advantage of the position that Peterborough find themselves in, as Kyprianou has the talent to be a star in the second tier and make a name for himself in the division in the middle of the park at Vicarage Road.

He proved against Birmingham City in the Vertu Trophy final at Wembley just how much quality he can provide, with his stunning strike handing the Posh a 2-0 lead before half-time, before he eventually lifted the cup.

The technique he showed when putting the ball into the back of the net was superb, and it is exactly what Cleverley needs in his team, as Watford look to push up the table next season.

Watford will face competition for Kypiranou's signature if they re-ignite their interest

While Kyprianou will most likely be a target for the Hornets in the summer, they more than likely will not be the only team pushing to sign him - especially with his contract situation.

Teams across the Championship will be keen to bring in the 23-year-old, with Peterborough set to play in League One once again, and he must surely be thinking about a move up to the EFL's top division.

Moussa Sissoko will be 36 in the first month of the 2025/26 campaign, and finding a long-term replacement for him will be at the top of Cleverley's list this summer and Kyprianou could be that as Watford look to end this season as strongly as possible.
