Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka insists the Premier League title race is not over for his former club Arsenal.

Xhaka left the Gunners in the summer to join Leverkusen and could win a treble in his first season with the club, having already won the Bundesliga and having reached the final of the DFB-Pokal and semi-finals of the Europa League after beating West Ham over two legs.

Arsenal were dealt a double blow this week, first being beaten by Aston Villa in the Premier League to lose control of the title race before being knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich.

But Xhaka says Arsenal can still achieve something special this season and is supporting them as a fan.

“I hope so because I think the team, the football club, the staff, deserve to win trophies and they are very close this year as well, like we were last year, but in football the small details are the difference and I hope that they can do it this year,” Xhaka said when asked if he thinks Arsenal are close to winning a trophy.

“This is football. I think they were ten or 11 games unbeaten and they lose one game, it doesn’t mean you lose everything already.

“There is six games left and still a big chance to win the Premier League and I wish them all the best because I’m still supporting them, I’m still in contact with the staff and players, and still watching the games.

“I had very good times at Arsenal for seven years, we were very close to winning the Premier League last year but it was not good enough.”
