An excellent performance from Eddie Howe’s side.

Joelinton leading the way with the winner and an overall man of the match performance.

However, the big talking point of course, was the Fabian Schar sending off.

So was that the right decision?

Having seen these highlights below, it just reinforces my opinion at the time inside St James’ Park.

Ben Brereton Diaz runs up behind Fabian Schar and shoves him to the ground, the referee had actually already blown to stop play and awarded a free-kick to Newcastle, so that makes the shove even worse, the match not even in play.

Anyway, a yellow card for the Southampton player as a minimum for that.

Schar jumps up and there is a coming together, then BOTH players move their heads forward.

The Southampton player then humiliating himself by collapsing to the ground as though hit by a hammer, to try and get Schar sent off.

I think this was a case of either both players getting a yellow, or both getting a red, even though I still think Schar’s only real offence was stupidity. However, to red card the Newcastle United defender and only give that cheat a yellow, is simply embarrassing. The referee and the VAR, matching Ben Brereton Diaz with their shameful actions, refusing to do the right thing.

See for yourselves.
