Viktor Gyokeres has reflected on the time he spent playing under Ruben Amorim prior to the coach’s Manchester United appointment.

The Sporting Lisbon talisman played a total of 68 games over one-and-a-half seasons with Amorim, returning a hugely impressive 66 goals and 23 assists.

Alas, it came as no surprise when Amorim set his sights on a reunion with Gyokeres at Old Trafford this summer amid a general expectation the player would be leaving Portugal.

Where will Gyokeres end up this summer?

That remains the case, although it was perhaps thought that he would’ve already completed a transfer by now.

Despite igniting his most prolific goalscoring form under the United boss’ guidance, Gyokeres was uninterested in making the move to M16, primarily because the side failed to qualify for the Champions League.

He informed Amorim of his decision several weeks ago, making it clear he had instead prioritised signing for Arsenal. Talks have been developing in recent days and, while it’s still anticipated he’ll end up at the Emirates, the prospective deal is reportedly at risk of collapsing after the Gunners failed to meet Sporting’s financial demands.

If such a situation did occur and the 27-year-old looked to seal a Premier League switch via United, it’d take an awful lot of grovelling from his end to get back in Amorim’s good books – especially given the comments he made when pressed on Gyokeres’ UCL hopes towards the end of last season.

“I didn’t talk to him, but if a player only wants to come to Manchester United to play Champions League, then he won’t come. We want players who want to represent United, not players who want to play certain competitions,” the Portuguese tactician told reporters.

Nonetheless, Gyokeres has voiced his gratitude for Amorim in a soon-to-be-released interview.

“Amorim played a big part in this because he was the one who really wanted me here and his style of football that we played under him suited me very well, I think,” the centre-forward told France Football, as relayed by L’Equipe.

“I can’t thank him enough.”
