January is here, but the focus on Chelsea is far more about sales than purchases.

There’s a desire to move on a few midfielders – Carney Chukwuemeka, Cesare Casadei and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall are all on the exit ramp. And more young players could join them, either on loan or permanently. There is work to be done – and certainly room to improve the first team squad too.

If we do manage to get those sales done, there will be scope to buy a player. On the London is Blue podcast, they discussed who their dream signing would be in this window, if only one was allowed.

Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley in a montage.

Guest CFC central didn’t have a player in mind, but did point to some areas in the team which he thought Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart might be looking to target:

“You look at right centre back as a big gaping hole… Fofana hasn’t been fit for three and a half years now… I don’t think you can find someone [on the market] who is better than peak Wes Fofana, the problem is that Fofana isn’t hitting his peak. He’s just been very unreliable… I think the club has to plan ahead,” the pundit said.

He also noted left back as a position where we could do with depth. Renato Veiga does a job, but he’s not good enough to really push Marc Cucurella to the next level, let’s face it.

It’s not an emergency by any means, but it’s certainly an area we should be keeping an eye on should the chance to sign someone like Milos Kerkez comes up either this winter or in the summer.
