While Chelsea have struggled since Christmas, their sister club Strasbourg have been on the opposite trajectory, losing just once since December to rocket up the Ligue 1 table into Champions League contention.

Last night they faced one of their tougher remaining tests as they took on Nice, their closest rival for a European spot.

It was a thrilling game at the Stade de La Meinau which went both ways. Nice opened the scoring, despite the home side having been on top for most of the first period.

But in the second period, the Alsatians got into gear. Chelsea superstar Andrey Santos, who has had a phenomenal season on loan, picked up an assist with a hopeful long ball over the top. It was all about Chelsea-linked Emanuel Emegha, who used his electric pace to roast a stumbling defender and then calmly shot the ball home for his 13th goal of the season.

Santos picked up a second assist not long later, this time making a perfectly timed tackle in central midfield to set up a counter, before releasing his debuting teammate Sam Amo-Ameyaw to score his first for the club.

Sadly for Liam Rosenior’s team, they conceded late on to make it 2-2. But it’s still a solid point, and they remain in the race for Europe, and potentially even the Champions League. With 7 games still to play, they sit in 6th place, which is enough to get them into the Conference League.

But they’re just 3 points off second place, meaning it’s all to play for, and just a couple of wins on the spin would see them very comfortable into the Champions League places. Winnable games to come against Angers, St Etienne and Le Havre mean that it’s very much on the cards.
