In an interview with Sport Bild, Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface has committed himself to his current Bundesliga club. The Nigerian international’s decision over his future with Leverkusen – for the moment – appears settled. Boniface enters his third season with Germany’s red company team.

Absolutely,” Boniface responded when asked if he wished to remain in Leverkusen. “My future is here. From my perspective, it’s 100 percent clear that I’m staying. I still have three years left on my contract, I want to win titles with Bayer and have a great season.

Even when things weren’t going so well for me last season, I spoke to [B04 sporting director] Simon Rolfes and told him that I love it here,” Boniface continued.  “The [January] transfer [to Al-Nassr] didn’t work out. It is what it is. I’m here.

Asked about the competitive nature of his duel with fellow Leverkusen center forward Patrik Schick – with whom Leverkusen also wish to extend – Boniface made specific reference to a Bundesliga match late last season. Namely, the 3-4 away win against Stuttgart on matchday 26.

Boniface entered proceedings in the 57th-minute and played alongside Schick. The two strikers both turned in an excellent performance, with Schick heading home the winning goal at 90+4.

Remember our 4-3 win in Stuttgart?” Boniface said. “We played together and had one of the best games of the season. Patrik is a very good friend. We push each other every day. In Belgium, I often played as a deep-lying striker or on the wing, and I did that in Leverkusen too.

When it came to the matter of all the players who have departed die Werkself this summer, something that has left plenty of B04 professionals wondering if they should remain with the club, Boniface insisted that the issue didn’t bother him.

Of course I miss my friends Jerry [Jeremie Frimpong], Jona [Jonathan Tah], and Flo [Florian Wirtz],” Boniface noted. “The coach [Xabi Alonso] and some of his assistants and several players have left. But we’ve also got some good players and a great coach [in Erik ten Hag] who’s had a lot of success at Ajax and Manchester United.

There’s always movement in football,” Boniface concluded. “That’s normal. Some come, some go.
