“Sometimes football gives you its highs, and sometimes it challenges you in ways you don’t expect,” Vicario posted on social media.

“I played 60 minutes at the Etihad with a broken bone in my ankle, giving absolutely everything I had for the team. Unfortunately there was no way around this one. I needed surgery.

“I’m disappointed I won’t be able to help the team for a while.”

The 28-year-old underwent surgery on his ankle and it is estimated that the injury the could keep him out of action for six to ten weeks.

Of the goalkeepers who have played every minute in the Premier League this season, Arsenal’s David Raya (12) is the only one to concede fewer goals than Vicario (13).

Vicario has prevented 2.9 goals more than he has conceded this term, according to post-shot expected goals data from FBref. Manchester United’s Andre Onana (4.4) is the only player with a better total in the Premier League.

Fraser Forster, Brandon Austin or Alfie Whiteman will step in for the Tottenham shot stopper while he recovers from surgery.
