Amidst the hoopla of Club World Cup semi-finals and Euro 2025 group stage games, the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup were contested on July 8th & 9th. At least, THREE of the games happened. The fixture between Philadelphia Union and New York Red Bulls was postponed after a thunderstorm delivered torrential rainfall, lighting and thunder upon Subaru Park.

Tonight, 36 days after the original, that fixture will be played.

Current Standings

The Hooligan Take

Standings, form, and home-field advantage all favor Philadelphia to win. However, their most recent two draws have come to bottom-feeding Houston Dynamo and Toronto FC, so there’s a risk of “playing down” here tonight. They’ve scored nine goals in that same five game span. Red Bulls have been all over the map, scoring five in a victory over New England; conceding five in a loss to Miami (plus eight more over the other four games). If Union can break the seal early, they should be able to put in multiple goals. It will be on the Red Bulls back line to hold tight, and their attackers to seize one on the counter.

Previous Match Results

Here’s the recap of the other quarterfinal games, in case you missed them.

Minnesota United FC 3 – 1 Chicago Fire FC

Fire went behind the eight ball early, Omar González drawing a red card for violent conduct after a lengthy VAR review. They also struck first only three minutes later from the penalty spot, Brian Gutiérrez slotting his shot into the lower left corner. The Loons equalized only minutes into the second half with Robin Lod’s close shot off Anthony Markanich’s cross. Chicago held off the Minnesota attack to keep the scoreline even at one and force the game into extra time. But the burden of playing a man short eventually wore the visitors down, and Kelvin Yeboah scored twice in the subsequent thirty minutes, the last one from the spot.

San Jose Earthquakes 2 (2) – 2 (4) Austin FC

Cristian Arango played both hero and villain on the night. His 12th minute goal opened San Jose’s scoring, but he missed the opening penalty kick during the eventual shootout. Benjamin Kikanovic gave the home side a temporary lead in the 99th minute of extra time, but that only lasted a quarter-hour. Both of Austin FC’s goals came from penalties, the first in regulation and the second during the 115th minute of extra time. With all four PKs converting the shootout, that’s six for six from the spot on the night.

Nashville SC 5 – 2 D.C. United

Prior to this fixture, D.C. United had a stellar record when scoring two goals in a game: registering four wins and two draws. Unfortunately, Nashville SC had caught a whiff of goal in the first half after going down two – nil in the first 24 minutes. They emerged from the locker room with their tails raised and inflicted a four goal onslaught against the hapless D.C. United defenders. Who else but Sam Surridge would kick things off, first with a penalty kick, then with a close-range shot. Andy Nájar and Walker Zimmerman would add two more in the final ten minutes to give Nashville a comfortable victory.
