Feyenoord crashed out of the UEFA Champions League last night, after a damning 5-2 second-leg defeat to Fenerbahçe countered a previous 2-1 win at De Kuip.
The Turkish media saw the Rotterdam side overrun in Istanbul, thanks in part to the fresh faces at Fenerbahçe. A rejuvenated energy was present in José Mourinho’s side, especially after he stoked the fires when previewing the clash saying, “Welcome to Hell”.
“Fenerbahçe completed a spectacular comeback on home soil,” explains Fanatik, as they delve into the history books. “Fenerbahçe qualified for the next round of European competition for the first time since 1998/99 after a defeat in the first leg of the knockout stage. In doing so, they continued their dominance against Dutch teams, securing their tenth victory.” A saving grace arrives with the fact that, with 11 wins for Dutch teams and five draws, the Netherlands still has a positive result against Turkish clubs.
“Feyenoord collapse in Istanbul,” reports Hürriyet. “Feyenoord suffered a crushing defeat in Istanbul.” According to the outlet, this was due to Fenerbahçe’s transfer frenzy this summer. “Fenerbahçe’s new signings, Archie Brown and Jhon Durán, scored their first official goals in Turkey. For Brown, it was even his first headed goal as a professional.”
Milliyet felt Fenerbahçe dominated Feyenoord. “Feyenoord was destroyed by Fenerbahçe,” reads the telling headline. “It was an evening full of fresh air,” the outlet pointed out, referring to the important role played by Fenerbahçe’s new signings. Fotomac offers a headline that’s also understandable in Dutch. “Feye MOORT,” it reads in large letters. “The Dutch are back home.”
