Celtic defender Auston Trusty has said it is good to be back after returning to training at Lennoxtown. The USA Internationalist was back at training last week as Brendan Rodgers’ pre-season plans get underway.
Speaking to Celtic TV, the ex-Arsenal player said that he missed his colleagues but that they were still in a groove with regards to training. “It feels good,” he said. “It was a short month off and I feel like it never happened really. We’re still kind of in the groove and to come back, see all the guys, you miss them. So it’s really good to be back.”
Trusty joined on transfer deadline day and he believes that the quality and characters in the dressing room helped him settle into the club.
“I think this team is really good,” he said, “so when I came here last year I was just into the team right away, the guys took me in and we all became friends right away. It’s a really good locker room.
“Luckily, I didn’t need a pre-season to get in with the boys. I’m really looking forward to this and spending a lot of time with the guys.”
Celtic will have an intensive few days before facing Queen’s Park on Friday before travelling to the Rebel County to face Cork then Portugal and Italy. Trusty will be eager to impress Rodgers, who signed him from Sheffield United last summer, and nail down that starting slot alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers. Arguably Celtic’s best displays last season came with Trusty and CCV at the back but Liam Scales’ consistency allowed the Irishman into the team whereby he kept his place.
Supporters on social media want another central defender to come in and nail down the spot beside CCV, which no one has done since Carl Starfelt left. This summer, however, Trusty can show that he is the man for the job.
