One of the January transfer window’s most confusing sagas so far was finally settled on Wednesday as the Blues confirmed that they had triggered their option to recall Chalobah early from his season-long loan spell at Selhurst Park.

“Chelsea has recalled defender Trevoh Chalobah from his loan spell at Premier League side Crystal Palace,” Chelsea said in a statement.

“The Academy graduate joined the Eagles on loan in August, featured 14 times under Oliver Glasner and scored three goals.

“Chalobah, who has made 80 appearances for the Blues, returns to Stamford Bridge with immediate effect and will join up with Enzo Maresca’s first-team squad. He will wear the No.23 shirt.”

Crystal Palace also confirmed the news, writing ahead of their Premier League clash with Leicester: “Crystal Palace can confirm that Chelsea have activated an option to recall Trevoh Chalobah from his loan spell. The defender will return to Chelsea.

“After joining Palace on loan in August, Chalobah made 14 appearances for the club, scoring three goals, including the opener in our 3-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion last month.

“Everyone at the club would like to thank Trevoh for his hard work and achievements in red and blue, and wish him the very best for his future.”

Chalobah only spent less than five months at Crystal Palace in total, but the club clearly made a quick impression on him.

Taking to his official X account on Wednesday, the centre-back wrote: “It was short and sweet, but this club made such an impact on me so quickly.

“I was made to feel at home from day one, from the staff, teammates, community and you the supporters. The atmosphere at Selhurst was a vibe every single game. Thank you all!! Trev.”

Chalobah will now compete with the likes of Levi Colwill, youngster Josh Acheampong and Tosin Adarabioyo for a starting role in central defence for out-of-form Chelsea, who are currently without both Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile due to injury.

Axel Disasi, meanwhile, could leave the club this month having been omitted entirely from Enzo Maresca’s matchday squad for Tuesday night’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.

Standard Sport understands that Chelsea will likely sell Chalobah on a permanent deal in the summer, should he wish to depart.
