Liverpool’s vice-captain, Trent Alexander-Arnold, was forced off during the second half of the Premier League victory over AFC Bournemouth last weekend. His absence was notable in Thursday night’s Carabao Cup win against Tottenham Hotspur, and it appears he will also miss Sunday’s Emirates FA Cup clash with Plymouth Argyle.
Head coach Arne Slot addressed Alexander-Arnold’s condition during a pre-match press conference, providing some insight into the defender’s recovery timeline. “No, I don’t think so yet. That’s going to be too early for him,” Slot said when asked about Alexander-Arnold’s availability for the Plymouth fixture.

Looking ahead to the highly anticipated Merseyside derby next Wednesday, Slot remained cautious. “Difficult to say [about the derby]. Like I said before, it’s not going to take months and not even weeks but that’s only three days after the Plymouth Argyle game, so let’s wait and see if he is available.”
The head coach emphasised the importance of a long-term perspective, especially with a congested fixture schedule on the horizon. “We also have to look at the long term, of course we don’t want to take any risks with so many games afterwards coming up. But if he’s fit then of course we will use him.”
In addition to Alexander-Arnold’s situation, Slot provided an update on midfielder Tyler Morton. The promising youngster has suffered a shoulder injury, which will see him out of action for an extended period.
Slot confirmed, “[Morton will be out] for weeks or maybe even longer,” indicating that Liverpool may need to adjust their midfield options in the coming matches.
These injuries pose a challenge for Liverpool as they navigate a busy part of the season. Alexander-Arnold’s creativity from the back and Morton’s growing influence in midfield will be missed, particularly with key fixtures on the horizon.
Slot’s cautious approach suggests that Liverpool are prioritising player welfare amid the demanding schedule. The hope remains that Alexander-Arnold can return in time to face Everton, while Morton’s recovery timeline will be monitored closely in the coming weeks.
