The latest social media activity on the part of the wife of Barcelona star İlkay Gündoğan has turned heads on Wednesday evening.

This comes after she moved to defend her husband, amid criticism from some sections of the club’s fanbase.

Gündoğan, of course, played his part on Tuesday night, as Barcelona were sent packing from the Champions League at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.

It was the German’s post-match comments, though, which truly caught the headlines.

As much came after Gündoğan, not for the first time this season, publicly criticised fellow members of Xavi’s Blaugrana ranks.

After Ronald Araújo’s red card cost Barca dear en route to their continental exit, Gündoğan, during an exchange with the media, made clear his frustrations with the Uruguayan:

“If he fouled him I guess it’s a red card. I haven’t seen the replay.

“But in these kind of crucial moments, you need to be sure to get the ball and if you can’t get it — again, I’m not sure if he got the ball or not — you have to stay away.

“I (would) prefer to concede the goal there or give the striker a one-on-one: give him the opportunity, let our goalkeeper save us or even concede a goal, because to be one man down with a red card so early in the game, it kills you.”

Such comments did not go down at all well with some of a Barcelona persuasion, who have taken aim at Gündoğan for what they evidently feel was an overly harsh response.

As alluded to above, though, late on Wednesday, the 33-year-old has been backed, by none other than his wife.

Taking to her official Instagram account a short time ago, Sara Gündoğan unveiled a photo of her husband lifting the Champions League trophy with Manchester City, accompanied by the caption:

“This man is a working hard guy, and his football opinions are about improving and he is giving everything to his team… His mentality is a treble mentality.”
