Tottenham Team News vs Eintracht Frankfurt

Dejan Kulusevski is the highest-profile absentee from the Spurs squad, though boss Ange Postecoglou is boosted by having Rodrigo Bentancur back from the ban that kept him out of the second leg against AZ Alkmaar. Richarlison returned from injury at the weekend and should take his place on the bench.

The Tottenham boss held back Micky van den Ven and Destiny Udogie for the weekend win over Southampton in the Premier League and they should both be recalled here.

Radu Dragusin has suffered an ACL tear and his season is over, but Kevin Danso could be back in time for the second leg in Germany.

Postecoglou feeling the pressure?

It is looking increasingly likely that Ange Postecoglou may have to win the Europa League in order to survive into a third season as Tottenham manager.

Things have unravelled for his Spurs side in spectacular fashion this season. There’s mitigation in the injuries that his squad have had to deal with, but even with bodies returning to full fitness, there is a vulnerability about the Lilywhites that was not there when Postecoglou enjoyed initial success after moving to North London from Celtic.

This season, Spurs are on course to finish outside the top 10 for the first time in 17 years. They have already lost 16 league games this season – their record in a 20-team league is 19, set in 2003-04.

Media reports prior to the weekend win over basement boys Southampton suggested that Postecoglou is under severe pressure, with Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola, Fulham’s Marco Silva and Brentford’s Thomas Frank just three of his Premier League peers being linked with his job.

The 56-year-old, who became the first Australian manager in Premier League history when appointed as Spurs boss in June 2023, is contracted to the club until 2027.

Chairman Daniel Levy is under increasing pressure from disgruntled fans, with perhaps a greater portion of blame being laid at his door than that of Postecoglou.

The Tottenham powerbroker appears willing to let the season play out and see how the cards fall.

If Postecoglou can somehow win the Europa League, ending Tottenham’s 17-year wait for a trophy and providing a path into the Champions League for next term, it would give him some credit in a managerial bank account that is looking severely overdrawn right now.

Postecoglou has spent £214.8m since he arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, forward Mathys Tel, defender Kevin Danso and goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky the most recent arrivals in January, though none of that trio are likely to start here.

The manager suggested back in August that he ‘always wins a trophy in his second season’ – having done so in Scotland, Japan and Australia in his previous posts.

He’s in the last chance saloon for silverware now and maybe in more ways than one as Spurs prepare for the biggest game of their season so far.
