On Saturday, there was plenty of action for Spurs loanees, including in the Championship. Let's take a look at how they got on.
Dane Scarlett and Oxford United hosted Sheffield Wednesday, whilst Ashley Phillips and Stoke City hosted Cardiff City.
We’ll begin with Scarlett and Oxford. The on loan Spurs striker came back into the team for this game, having been a substitute in the defeat at Queens Park Rangers in midweek.
Early on in the game, the U’s took the lead, but 11 minutes later Wednesday would equalise. They would then add two goals within the first 16 minutes of the second half, which would be enough to condemn Des Buckingham’s side to a 3-1 defeat, as they continue to struggle for points in the Championship.
Although he did not find the back of the net, one sign of encouragement for Scarlett is he played the whole 90 minutes for the first time since joining on loan. In every game before this one, he has either come on the bench, or been subbed off – pretty much exclusively trading minutes with Wales international Mark Harris.
However, with Oxford needing a goal, Harris was brought on to play alongside the young Spurs striker, rather than coming on for him. The 20-year old had three shots across the 90 minutes, with one being defined as a “big chance”. All the attempts were within the first 26 minutes of the game. He also won 3 out of 4 of his ground duels, and completed his only dribble attempt.
This defeat leaves Oxford in 20th place in the Championship, two places and one point outside the relegation zone, having played a game more than Portsmouth in 22nd place.
As for Phillips, he was named in the starting XI for Stoke once again. The Potters scored the first and final goals of the game, with Cardiff scoring two in between, as the sides played out a 2-2 draw. Funnily enough, Phillips’ defensive partner, Ben Gibson, scored an own goal – and the equaliser after 95 minutes. The young Spurs defender was taken off for a striker after 79 minutes, as Stoke threw the kitchen sink at the game.
This point leaves them in 17th place in the Championship, with 22 points from their 21 games so far.
Next up for Oxford is an almighty tough game, as they face Leeds United away from home next Saturday, where Scarlett could go up against former Tottenham central defender Joe Rodon. Kick off is 15:00 GMT. As for Stoke, they face Sheffield Wednesday, also away from home. Kick off there is 12:30 GMT.
