Tottenham Hotspur have approached Manchester City to express their interest in signing Swiss defender Manuel Akanji, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Akanji, who joined Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, featured prominently in City’s treble-winning campaign but has fallen down the pecking order.
He is yet to feature for City this term and was notably absent from the matchday squad against Tottenham last time out.
AC Milan, Crystal Palace and Galatasaray have been linked with him, but Tottenham are also in the race.
Spurs are aiming to strengthen their backline before the transfer deadline and are currently eyeing a move for Akanji.
The Lilywhites were previously linked with a move for Piero Hincapie, but he is closing in on a move to Arsenal.
Akanji is capable of playing multiple positions in defence and would be a good acquisition for new Tottenham manager Thomas Frank.
Despite having signed six players already, Spurs are still active in the market and are set for a busy end to the transfer window.
They are on the verge of finalising a move for Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig after recently agreeing a €60 million deal.
One more attacker could still come through the door alongside a new defender ahead of what is set to be a demanding campaign for Tottenham on their return to the Champions League.
Heading into the first international break of the season, Spurs will go in search of three wins from their three league outings on Saturday when Bournemouth visit London.
