Charlton Athletic moved into the League One play-off places after a dramatic 2-1 win over Leyton Orient at the Gaughan Group Stadium on Saturday.

After an inconsistent start to the season, Charlton sat as low as 14th in the table in mid-December, and manager Nathan Jones' position came under threat as some supporters called for him to be sacked.

However, the Addicks have been in outstanding form in recent months, losing just two of their last 16 league games, and their rise up the table continued with the victory over fellow promotion hopefuls Orient at the weekend.

It looked as though Charlton were heading for defeat after Jordan Brown's stunning strike put the O's ahead in the 50th minute, but two stoppage-time goals from Macaulay Gillesphey and Kayne Ramsey turned the game around for the visitors, sparking jubilant scenes of celebration in the away end after the game.

The Addicks are now sixth in the table, two points clear of seventh-placed Bolton Wanderers, and they are back in action when they host 10th-placed Barnsley at The Valley on Tuesday night.

When asked if he believes the club now have a fantastic chance of achieving promotion, FLW's Charlton Athletic fan pundit Ben Fleming stressed that it is still too soon to get carried away, but he admitted he is hopeful the Addicks will finish in the top six this season.

"It typifies everything that Nathan Jones has done with his squad in terms of turning us into a team that is hard to beat and never gives up," Ben said.

"It always felt in years gone by that we were the team that would throw away leads at that stage of games, and now we're better than anyone else in the league and winning games and scoring goals late on, so that's fantastic.

"In terms of the play-offs, I think a fantastic chance of being promoted is a tad optimistic.

"Most Charlton fans won't want to get swept away too much with just one win, albeit a great win against a promotion rival, but it does put us in a good spot to get into the play-offs.

"There's still so much of the season to go, even just this week we've got Barnsley at home on Tuesday night, and then we travel to Mansfield.

"Barnsley are four points below us, so if we don't get good results in those games, we could easily find ourselves on the outside looking in again.

"Our run after these next two is quite good, but we've still got to go to Wycombe and Wrexham in two of the last three games of the season.

"I think it's far too early to get overexcited about what we can do this season.

"We're in a great spot, and all Charlton fans have wanted over the last two or three years is to be in the mix, so it's great to be in contention.

"If we keep playing the way we are, it's difficult to envisage us dropping out.

"But if you look at Barnsley, they go on a good run and are suddenly right back in it, and Bolton won three in a row under Schumacher to come back into it.

"There are so many teams vying for it, so I think it's difficult to predict what will happen at this stage with any confidence, but we're in the mix, we're playing well and a lot of Charlton fans are hopeful."

Nathan Jones deserves huge credit for Charlton Athletic turnaround

After years of disappointment under the likes of Nigel Adkins, Johnnie Jackson, Ben Garner, Dean Holden and Michael Appleton, it looked as though Jones' tenure at Charlton was heading in a similar direction following a poor first half of the season.

However, Jones has inspired an impressive turnaround to reignite the Addicks' season, and his side have been one of the form teams in League One over the past few months.

As things stand, Charlton look in a strong position to secure a play-off place, but as Ben said, with the likes of Bolton Wanderers, Leyton Orient, Reading and Barnsley close behind, their spot in the top six is still far from guaranteed.
