Leicester City could have a free run at Danny Rohl as he looks to confirm his departure from Sheffield Wednesday.

After weeks and weeks of constant speculation, it finally seems as though Danny Rohl’s future at Sheffield Wednesday will be sorted.

The German is expected to finalise his exit from Hillsborough shortly, with the head coach and the club set to reach a compromise after financial aspects of his contract were believed to be a problem.

From Wednesday’s perspective, it’s far from ideal to lose such a talented manager, but the reality is that this uncertainty was doing a lot more harm than good, particularly as the group returned to training.

Once his departure is confirmed, attention will turn to Rohl’s successor for Wednesday, and it remains to be seen who they can attract given the ownership situation, along with the transfer restrictions that are in place.

It will also be interesting to see where Rohl ends up. The 36-year-old has been a man in-demand this summer, with a host of clubs believed to be keen, including RB Leipzig and Southampton.

Another club previously linked with the ex-Bayern Munich coach was Leicester, who have finally made a call on Ruud van Nistelrooy.

After uncertainty of their own, the Foxes revealed on Friday morning that van Nistelrooy had been sacked, which does at least offer some clarity to supporters, who had been baffled by the lack of action since their relegation was confirmed.

Whether it’s a coincidence or not, who knows, but with Rohl set to be available, it seems a fantastic opportunity has opened up for Leicester - and it's reported already that he is a target for the vacancy.

And, bringing him to the King Power Stadium could be relatively straightforward for the Foxes, as it's believed he will be available for just £1m in compensation, which is half of what it had been earlier this summer.

Hansi Flick’s former number two ticks a lot of boxes for the Midlands outfit, and bringing him in would be considered a real coup for Leicester.

Firstly, Rohl has proven himself at this level, as he miraculously kept the Owls in the second tier after his appointment in 2023, and he followed that up by leading them to a safe mid-table finish despite all the off-field issues that he has encountered at Hillsborough.

During that period, Rohl has also shown that he is tactically astute, and he has managed to overachieve with a Wednesday squad despite having a modest budget.

A key remit for whoever takes over at the King Power Stadium will be to integrate some of the highly-rated talents they have coming through, notably Jeremy Monga, and Rohl’s background in coaching and how he has worked one-to-one with some of the biggest names in the game, means he is ideally suited to do just that.

The job at Leicester won’t be easy, as the fans are hugely frustrated with the owner, and certain figures at the club, but Rohl has been used to working in a difficult environment at Wednesday, so that experience could be important.

There had been a lot of confusion and anger at Leicester due to the apparent indecisiveness at board level following their relegation.

In many ways, that was understandable, but that patient approach would have paid off in style if Leicester have a clear run at Rohl. The timing of Rohl's exit hitting the gas and Leicester's managerial hunt beginning is just a little too convenient.
