It was a depressing Monday night for Manchester United at Selhurst Park, with our heaviest defeat of the season leaving us eighth in the table with just three league matches left to play.

The season collapsed bit by bit since the beginning of the campaign.

There was misery in Europe, upset in the League Cup earlier rounds and shocking league form until Christmas.

Sadly, United never got going and there is no denying that injuries have been a huge factor.

It is so bad right now that I wish the season was over – but we need to stick it out for a bit before a trip to Wembley, which we have low expectations for after a run of poor results in the Premier League.

On Monday night, we faced a well-drilled Crystal Palace team with Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise causing havoc down the wings.

The Eagles were deserving of their three points on the night. United lost 4-0 and failed to land a single punch on Oliver Glasner’s side.

Here are some of the depressing stats that emerged from a night that most Reds will want to move on from as quickly as possible…

Crystal Palace complete first Premier League double over Manchester United

To add to the misery of losing 4-0, Palace recorded a first-ever league double against United. It was also their first sequence of three consecutive home victories since October 2022.

Casemiro breaks season record after being danced around

The Brazilian’s terrible performance against Palace on Monday evening was arguably his worst yet in a United shirt as the Reds fell to a 4-0 defeat – and another unwanted stat has prevailed that highlights just how poor he was under the Selhurst Park lights.

Casemiro was one of United’s best players last season as Ten Hag ended the club’s six-year trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup. The former Real Madrid midfielder scored against Newcastle in the final, but this season he has fallen off a cliff and it’s only a matter of time before he moves elsewhere.

United cannot afford to have a defensive midfielder who struggles to cover ground, especially when the transitions from attack to defence this season have been rapid. It’s no wonder Casemiro keeps getting overrun.

According to WhoScored, Casemiro was dribbled past eight times against Palace – the most times any player in the Premier League had been dribbled past in a game of all season.

Casemiro took plenty of criticism on Monday night after the game, and rightly so, but he wasn’t alone.

13 defeats in the Premier League

United’s defeat on Monday night was our 13th in the league this season, which breaks the previous record of 12 that was set during the 2013/14 and 2021/22 campaigns.

The Reds have three games left – against Arsenal, Newcastle and Brighton – and could easily lose all of them.

Last night’s disgraceful showing was our biggest loss of the season so far, with goals from transfer target Michael Olise (two), Jean-Philippe Mateta and Tyrick Mitchell securing a memorable win for the home outfit.

As it stands, United are eight in the table and if we stay there, we will not only miss out on European qualification but also record our lowest finish in the Premier League. The previous record is seventh from the 2013/14 season, although United could still finish as low as 10th this term.
