Real Madrid legend – it seems fair to adjudicate even ahead of his departure – Luka Modric is set to become captain of Los Blancos next season, as the longest-serving player after Nacho Fernandez’s exit. The Croatian will turn 39 in just a couple of months, and has been making history for some time, but is on the verge of some incredible feats.

If he plays a single match beyond the 17th of October, Modric will become the oldest player ever to play for the club. The current record  belongs to Ferenc Puskas at 39 years and 36 days old, explain Diario AS. During the celebrations of their Champions League win, Carlo Ancelotti and President Florentino Perez declared that they were already looking towards winning the next one. If they do so, Modric would become one of just two to have won the most in history, with seven. Currently he is one of four tied on six with Dani Carvajal, Toni Kroos and Nacho Fernandez, although naturally Carvajal would also move onto seven.

Where Carvajal cannot yet compete is with Modric’s trophy haul. The veteran Croatian is currently tied on 26 for the most trophies in Real Madrid history with the man who will hand the captain’s armband to him, Nacho. He will have seven opportunities to lift a 27th, with the European Supercup, Champions League, Spanish Supercup, La Liga, Copa del Rey, World Club Cup and Intercontinental Cup.

The 38-year-old looked set to leave the club just months ago, but will instead be at the Santiago Bernabeu until he is at least approaching his 40th birthday. Regardless of what records he ends up setting, those in the Spanish capital can rest assured they will never see his like again.
