Thomas Müller: 'You have to accept it'

FC Bayern are out of the Club World Cup after a 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals. Despite a surplus of chances, the Munich men failed to convert their opportunities into goals and were punished in the latter stages, Désiré Doué giving PSG the lead (78’) before Ousmane Dembélé sealed it deep into stoppage time (90’+6).

The defending UEFA Champions League winners managed to see it through despite losing Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernández to late red cards. “When you lose, it’s always tough. First you have to accept it and process it,” said Thomas Müller after the final whistle. Vincent Kompany also expressed his disappointment: “It’s a shame. I knew it would be a close game. It could’ve finished 1-0 or 2-0 to us or them.” fcbayern.com rounds up the rest of the post-match reaction for you.

Reaction to match against PSG

Max Eberl: “Bayern Munich went toe-to-toe with the current Champions League winners and played very well. One moment then left us trailing. We nevertheless kept occupying them, we caused them to get a red card. Then we had to keep going to the last moment with 11 against nine. We learned the hard way today that we didn’t do that well, and instead conceded the second goal. That obviously shouldn’t happen. The team have had a great tournament, though. We’ve shown in an incredibly active and attractive way what this club can and wants to do. When you’re knocked out, you’re disappointed in the first instance.”

Vincent Kompany: “We weren’t rewarded for a performance that was exactly what was required against PSG. That’s a shame. I knew it would be a close game. It could’ve finished 1-0 or 2-0 to us or them. That’s how it turned out. It was a game with high intensity and high quality. Tomorrow we fly home and have three weeks off. It’s important that the boys can also mentally switch off a bit now – especially the boys who were away with their national teams. We need to regain our strength for next season.”

Manuel Neuer: “It never looked like being a 2-0 defeat, but rather that we could win the match today. I think we were at our best. I think, when you go into games the way that we did there, we’ll eventually be rewarded. We gave it everything on the day to win the match. In the end what matters is who goes through – Paris have gone through and we’re now going home. That’s harsh but we didn’t deserve it either.

“It’s been a hard, tiring season for us. FC Bayern are a force to be reckoned with – you’ve seen that this season. This match in particular is an example, to say: now more than ever, we want to go for it in Europe again, and also be up there in the Bundesliga and DFB Cup again. We need to take this motivation from games like this, to say: this time we’re on it.”

Thomas Müller: “When you lose, it’s always tough. First you have to accept it and process it. When you watch the game, it had everything. Our team played well, we really held our own in the first half – also in terms of our tackling and pressing. That’s why they actually took less risk in the second half. They played a lot more long balls and were deliberately no longer trying to play out from the back. I always had the feeling we were close to scoring a goal ourselves. We had two offside goals and a lot of situations where we came within a whisker. At the end it cranked up and got really wild – and a bit unfair with the red cards. Things got a little too heated there. Then we just lacked one moment, one goal to take it to extra time. But they won – and in the end we had nothing to show for our good performance.

“It’s extremely bitter to go out because it really is the end now. You have these moments at half-time in which you struggle to focus on the task. We’re not robots after all – we have personal relationships. Jamal especially has had rotten luck the last few months. I wish him well.”

Konrad Laimer: “It was an evenly matched game, decided by fine margins. Moments just make the difference in these games. We never gave up. They got two red cards at the end. I believed until the end that we would equalise, but then you concede a goal like that. That’s how it is at a tournament. It’s 90 minutes – that’s football.”

Reaction from the PSG camp

Luis Enrique (coach): “It was a very intensive game – I was kicking every ball. I knew both teams would get a lot of chances over the 90 minutes. We’re very happy that we won. The ending was a bit crazy and there were a lot of intense situations. And both players who got sent off made it even harder for us to hang on.”

Désiré Doué (forward): “We have a good minset, it was a collective win in a difficult match. We had to present in the duels, which wasn’t easy. We’re very glad to have got the win. That’s the most important thing.”
