The 24/25 season was a disappointing campaign for Manchester City. There is no other way to describe that campaign but it may have been the season City had to have. From last season’s disappointment, there is a sense of optimism that surrounds Pep Guardiola’s rebuilt squad entering the 25/26 season. With the talent in the City squad and the hunger seemingly back amongst the Manchester City players, Pep Guardiola’s side could be a dangerous proposition next season.
Earlier this week, Manchester City held an open training session at the Joie Stadium. What stood out was how crisp and ready to play Pep Guardiola’s squad appears. There looks to be an edge to the City squad. The hunger appears to be back amongst the Manchester City players which is a good sign for the 25/26 season.
Speaking after Manchester City’s open training session, in an interview published on mancity.com, Pep Guardiola revealed that there is a good vibe and spirit amongst his squad. Guardiola explained: “Of course, we want to try and do better than last season, especially with consistency.”
“You know whenever we start the season, we don’t think how many achievements are we going to get, it’s week by week month by month try to be better and improve our football, because at the beginning it’s always difficult.”
“But if we’re in the vibe and spirit we started to create in America at the Club World Cup, hopefully our people will be proud.”
In a separate interview with mancity.com, England international John Stones revealed that last season was a humbling experience for Manchester City. The centre-back also revealed that the City players are eager to return to their best. He said: “It was humbling for us, after all the success we’ve had.”
“It makes us realise what we’ve done, what we’ve achieved over the years and how proud we should be, but we’re obviously frustrated at what we did last season. It’s not what we want to replicate.”
“To finish third, three or four points behind Arsenal is – to our standards – not good, (nor) how we played through the season.”
“We’ve got to put that right and get back to our identity, get back to winning matches and having that presence about us and believing in ourselves as a team.”
After a busy summer in the transfer market the Manchester City squad is loaded with talent. That’s not a surprise given City’s standing as a club. There does seem to be a different vibe and look to Pep Guardiola’s squad. With players such as Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders and James Trafford added to City’s ranks there are match winners in every line. But talent alone does not win matches. Nor does it win titles and trophies. It also takes drive and determination. It seems that the hunger is back amongst the City squad.
Perhaps last season was needed to jolt the Manchester City squad. They had ridden the crest of a wave so to speak until the 24/25 season. But last season that wave crashed. It could have been exactly what Pep Guardiola’s side needed to set them up for a new run. If it has, coupled with the tremendous ability in the City squad anything is possible.
At times it feels like Manchester City are being overlooked or written off ahead of next season. But if the hunger is back in Pep Guardiola’s side they will be a formidable proposition. Under a hungry and determined Guardiola, Manchester City shouldn’t be discounted. If they start the 25/26 season in a strong fashion it could signal that they are back and that is a scary thought for their rivals.
