As no doubt most of you will be beware of by now, the UK broadcasters have refused to show Newcastle v Everton on Sunday.

They aren’t showing Fulham v Manchester City either.

It looked like an open goal for Sky Sports and TNT Sports to show all four matches on Sunday that will decide which three of five Premier League clubs will qualify for the final three Champions League places.

What makes it all the more frustrating and inexplicable, is that with the title and all three relegation places confirmed some considerable time ago, the entire media agenda led by Sky Sports and TNT Sports, has been the race for the last three Champions League places.

The two UK broadcasters insisted on spreading out the Premier League matches throughout May that involved Newcastle Man City, Villa, Forest and Chelsea.

Of the 15 Premier League matches involving these five clubs in the first three weeks of May, Sky Sports and TNT Sports showed 14 of the 15. Amusingly, the one they ignored produced the biggest shock result, Man City failing to win against rock bottom long since relegated Southampton.

So after showing 14 of 15 this month, Sky Sports and TNT Sports then refuse to show two of the four Champions League deciding fixtures on the final day of the season. It feels a bit like a major drama series and for some unexplained reason, they then don’t show the very final episode when you find out who was the murderer, who got a Champions League place, whatever.

TNT Sports are showing Man U v Villa, whilst Sky Sports are showing Forest v Chelsea AND the Liverpool v Palace friendly. A nothing match at Anfield.

However, there is even more frustration to be had, when you consider what is just around the corner.

The new Premier League TV deals for the UK kick in as from next (2025/26) season and you will be lucky to experience many Premier League matches that WON’T be shown live by Sky Sports or TNT Sports, especially if you are talking about the teams/clubs that are usually shown the most, which of course includes Newcastle United.

This current 2024/25 Premier League season, 200 of the 380 PL matches will have been broadcast by Sky Sports, TNT Sports and Amazon by the end of Sunday.

Next season (2025/26) ‘at least’ 267 of the 380 Premier League matches will be shown live in the UK by Sky Sports and TNT Sports.

TNT Sports will once again show 52 PL matches, the same as the current season, Sky Sports though are increasing their number of live Premier League matches from 128 this season, to ‘at least’ 215 next season. Amazon no longer showing any.

This means at least 70% of the 380 matches in the next Premier League season will be shown live in the UK, including ALL ten on the final day of the 2025/26 season!

This surely makes it even more bizarre that Sky Sports and TNT Sports had no appetite to show more than two of the four huge final day matches this season that will decide who gets Champions League football.

I really hope that Sky Sports are rewarded for this, by seeing a year from now, all ten matches on the last day of the 2025/26 Premier League season with absolutely nothing to play for.

Sky Sports committed to broadcasting the final matches featuring all 20 Premier League clubs but with the title, relegation AND Champions League places already sorted.

Premier League official release – 11 May 2025:

‘Premier League fans in the UK who sign up for Sky Sports now will be able to watch an incredible 215 top-flight matches LIVE in 2025/26 – a 70 per cent increase on this season’s 128 games.

Sky Sports’ enhanced coverage of Premier League football next season will include the broadcaster having FIRST PICK of the fixtures EVERY week and therefore showing the very BEST matches from August through until May.

There will be also more live matches on Friday evenings and Monday nights, making Sky Sports the place to see the first and final action in a Premier League weekend.

In another first for Sky Sports, there will be multiple matches shown live in the Sunday 14:00 BST / GMT slot on a number of weekends. Meanwhile, Sunday 16:30 BST / GMT will remain the flagship kick-off time.

Most of the festive fixtures will be shown by Sky Sports too, with Boxing Day football making a welcome return to its channels.

Not only will there be all of the above, all the matches on the crucial last day of the Premier League season will be live in one place for the first time, creating a real moment for fans of the league and its 20 clubs.’
