“I never put pressure on myself. I knew I was going to beat the record,” Mbappé told Canal Plus after scoring PSG’s final goal on the night and passing Edinson Cavani’s previous record mark of 200 goals for the club.
“Just playing here is a privilege. I have progressed a lot as a player, and changed a lot. I was a young player, talented maybe but still young, and I have learned a lot of things here, as a man too,” added the 24-year-old, who signed for the club from AS Monaco in 2017.
Mbappé scored his record-breaking goal while wearing the captain’s armband after skipper Marquinhos had earlier come off injured.
“For me, as a native Parisian, this is special. If someone had said to me I would score the goal to beat the record while wearing the captain’s armband, I wouldn’t have believed it.”
Mbappé, who was the top scorer at the recent World Cup in Qatar, added: “I play to make history and I have always said I wanted to make history in France, in the capital of my country, in my city, and I am doing that. It’s magnificent, but there is still a lot to be done.”
He also expressed optimism ahead of Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League last-16 second leg against Bayern Munich, into which PSG go trailing 1-0 from the first leg.
“We are going there to qualify. We are determined, we have our confidence back and now we have to win.”
