Raphinha once again proved his worth for Barcelona in the Champions League, delivering a match-winning performance in the second leg of the round of 16 against Benfica.
Scoring twice in the 3-1 victory, the Brazilian winger not only secured his team’s progression but also cemented his place as the tournament’s top scorer with 11 goals.
His exceptional form has now placed him firmly in the conversation for the prestigious Ballon d’Or.
Football legend Thierry Henry echoed this sentiment. While speaking on CBS Sports, the former French forward was asked about the leading candidates for the Ballon d’Or and did not hesitate to put Raphinha at the top of the list.
According to Henry, Raphinha has been the standout performer in the Champions League this season, making a strong case for the award.
While players like Mohamed Salah and Harry Kane are also among the favourites, Henry highlighted Raphinha’s ability to score without relying on penalties—a factor that could set him apart in the final consideration.
“He’s up there. Raphinha is ahead for me now. He’s scored 11 goals in the Champions League. Mo Salah is a great candidate, Kane is a candidate, and Dembele depends.
“If you do well in the Champions League and also win your league, obviously you’ll have a chance,” he explained.
Beyond just his goal-scoring prowess, Raphinha’s all-round game has been vital for Barcelona. His defensive contribution, work rate, and pressing ability make him a complete forward—something that Henry believes is often overlooked.
“Raphinha is at his best, with a lot of goals and only one penalty. It’s incredible, but we need to talk a little bit more about him.”
He explained that a forward’s job is not just about scoring but also about pressing, tracking back, and helping out defensively, and Raphinha excels in all these aspects.
“What Raphinha is doing, besides defending in pressure? Because when you are a complete striker you also have to know how to press, defend, help the fullback and press well.
“There are many things to do and Raphinha does them all,” he noted.
This season has been the best of Raphinha’s professional career. In 41 appearances across all competitions, he has recorded 27 goals and 19 assists, numbers that put him in contention for football’s highest individual honour.
However, statistics alone are not enough to win the Ballon d’Or. For the Brazilian to have a serious shot at lifting the trophy, he will need to guide Barcelona to silverware by the end of the season.
