Scout Mick Brown has joined the chorus of voices pointing to increasing pressure on Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca as results continue to slump.
“I think the pressure on his (Maresca’s) position is growing,” Brown said in quotes for Football Insider.
“These owners have been very trigger-happy since they took over, so nothing would surprise me. Results in recent weeks haven’t been good enough, there’s no doubt about that.
“Then when the fans start to make their voices and concerns known, it only adds to that pressure. If they don’t start winning games soon, especially when you look at where they were earlier this season, I think they’ll get rid of him.”
This really echoes what Adam Crafton said yesterday about Maresca and potential “heat” on him:
“They just shouldn’t be finishing below Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth. As well as those teams have performed, with the level of investment that Chelsea have made, I don’t think it’s unreasonable for the owners to have expected Enzo Maresca to do better,” Crafton said.
“Given the position they were in during November and at the start of December, they have got to finish in the Champions League spots. It is a bit of a disaster if they end up sixth.
“The club won’t accept things continuing as they have been in their past few games – two wins in nine in the Premier League. There is definitely a bit of heat on him.”
Enzo Maresca looks lost on the touchline as Brighton batter Chelsea.
We disagree. There’s no doubt there’s pressure, and that could grow.
But even if Chelsea were to finish below 6th this season – which would frankly be a disaster, we just can’t see Maresca being fired. It reflects too badly on the sporting directors, who have already worked their way through a host of coaches. If Maresca goes after a season, they would be sure to follow, and they’re not going to write their own death warrant like that.
