Bild reports that there are questions over the possibility of extending the contract of Borussia Dortmund captain Emre Can.
The midfielder’s current contract expires in 2026 and there are several question marks over whether he will be offered a new deal or not. The only realistic chance that Can will have his contract extended at Dortmund is if they qualify for Europe at the end of the season. However, there are still doubts.
Those doubts are based around Can’s performances. Earlier in the season, he struggled a lot but recently under new head coach Niko Kovac, he has improved in his performances, most notably filling it at centre-back alongside Nico Schlotterbeck. Other questions are whether this uptick in performance warrants a new contract, is Can the right captain for the future?, and can the 31-year-old be a part of the impending rebuild.
If Dortmund decide not to extend Can’s contract, then this upcoming summer would be one of the final chances that they could sell him for a decent fee.
The captain is not the only one in this situation as there are also doubts surrounding the futures of Julian Brandt and Niklas Süle.
