The Newcastle players to score 20 goals in a Premier League season | OneFootball

Alexander Isak celebrated a milestone in the Premier League this month after scoring his 20th goal of the campaign for Newcastle.

Isak’s effort against Burnley saw the Swedish striker became the first Newcastle player in 20 years to reach 20 league goals in a top-flight season.

Just five players have ever achieved the feat in the Premier League era and we’ve remembered the Magpies’ marksmen to do so.

Andy Cole (1993/94)

Andy Cole produced a spectacular first season in the Premier League as the young forward took the division by storm in 1993/94. Cole had helped Newcastle to promotion the previous season and the Magpies soon made their presence felt in the top tier.

Kevin Keegan’s side ended the season third in the Premier League table, with Cole’s prolific form helping Newcastle to UEFA Cup qualification. He scored 34 league goals, setting a single-season record that would take 29 years to eclipse, to win the Premier League’s Golden Boot and also led the league for assists (13).

His performances saw Cole win the PFA Young Player of the Year award, as he set a new club record with 41 goals in all competitions.

Peter Beardsley (1993/94)

The 1993/94 season saw Newcastle have two players reach 20 goals in the Premier League. Peter Beardsley dovetailed to devastating effect with the aforementioned Cole, as the deadly duo combined for 55 goals in the league alone.

Beardsley had returned for a second spell at Newcastle from Everton the previous summer and scored 21 goals in the Premier League to earn inclusion in the PFA Team of the Year.

He later captained the club to two runners-up finishes in the Premier League (1995/96 and 1996/97) as Kevin Keegan’s ‘Entertainers’ came close to ending the club’s long wait for a league title.

Beardsley brought an end to his time at Newcastle having scored 117 goals across two spells at St James’ Park.

Les Ferdinand (1995/96)

Newcastle spent £6m to sign Les Ferdinand from Queens Park Rangers in 1995, as the Magpies reinvested the British record fee received from Andy Cole’s sale to Manchester United.

Ferdinand had scored 60 league goals across the previous three Premier League campaigns at QPR and continued that form in the North East. His debut season saw Ferdinand score 25 league goals, the best return of his career, as Newcastle finished as runners-up to Manchester United.

His exploits earned ‘Sir’ Les the 1995/96 PFA Players’ Player of the Year award.

Alan Shearer (1996/97, 1999/2000, 2001/02 and 2003/04)

Newcastle broke the world transfer record to bring hometown hero Alan Shearer to the club in 1996.

Shearer had scored 112 goals in 138 league appearances for Blackburn Rovers, winning back-to-back Golden Boots and the 1994/95 Premier League title at Ewood Park. The Geordie goal-getter formed a brilliant partnership with Ferdinand during his debut season at Newcastle and scored 25 league goals to win a third consecutive Golden Boot.

That campaign was the first of four 20+ goal seasons for Shearer at Newcastle, as the forward went on to become both Newcastle’s and the Premier League’s record goalscorer.

He scored 206 times in all competitions for the Magpies, breaking Jackie Milburn’s club record, and ended his career with 260 goals in the Premier League.

Unsurprisingly, he enjoys God-like status at St James’ Park.

Alexander Isak (2023/24)

Isak’s goal against Burnley saw him become the first Newcastle player in two decades to reach 20 goals in a Premier League season.

Having earlier missed a penalty, he turned in from Jacob Murphy’s cross minutes later to reach the goalscoring milestone.

After arriving from Real Sociedad for a club-record fee last season, Isak has taken his game to new heights in 2023/24.

Tall, quick, and skilful with ice-cool composure around goal, he has established himself as one of the most exciting centre-forwards in English football. Newcastle could face a fight to hold onto his services in the summer.
