Goalscorers usually command the biggest price tags in football but who are the most expensive strikers in Premier League history?

Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, in a transfer that will take the Frenchman into this list.

5. Rasmus Hojlund – Atalanta to Manchester United (£72m)

Manchester United spent £72m to sign Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta in 2023, concluding a rapid rise for the Danish forward. Hojlund had moved from Copenhagen, to Sturm Graz, and then Atalanta in successive summers, before moving to the Premier League after one impressive campaign in Serie A.

Despite a slow start, Hojlund showed promise in his debut campaign, scoring 16 goals in all competitions.

However, the 22-year-old struggled during his second season at Old Trafford, netting only four times in the Premier League. He has been linked with an exit this summer.

4. Kai Havertz – Bayer Leverkusen to Chelsea (£72m)

Kai Havertz arrived at Chelsea with a blossoming reputation, joining as an attacking midfielder before predominantly playing as a lone forward.

The German endured a mixed three seasons with Chelsea, scoring 32 times in 139 games, though did cement his place in club folklore with the winner in the 2021 Champions League final.

Havertz crossed the capital to sign for London rivals Arsenal in a £65m deal in 2023.

3. Romelu Lukaku – Everton to Manchester United (£75m)

Romelu Lukaku’s prolific period at Everton prompted Manchester United to spend big on the Belgian in 2017.

Lukaku had scored 87 goals in 166 games for Everton and initially picked up where he left off, netting 27 times in his debut campaign. The forward managed 15 goals the following season despite a downturn in form and favour, before departing for Inter Milan.

2. Darwin Nunez – Benfica to Liverpool (£85m)

Liverpool broke the bank to sign Darwin Nunez from Benfica in 2022, agreeing a deal that could reach a club-record £85m.

Nunez signed for an initial fee of £64m, with potential add-ons swelling the sum to £85m. The Uruguayan hit the ground running with a goal in the Community Shield, but has endured an up-and-down time at Anfield.

Despite flashes of real quality and a well-appreciated work rate, a catalogue of erratic finishing has plagued his career with the club.

After 40 goals in 132 games for the Reds, Nunez is expected to move on this summer.

A second place on this list for Romelu Lukaku, whose £319m cumulative career transfer fees is the second-highest of any footballer in history.

Lukaku returned to the Premier League with Chelsea in 2021, after two spectacular seasons at Inter Milan. The Belgian returned with a point to prove, having failed to make the grade at Chelsea as a teenager. However, he mustered just eight league goals and alienated the fans with a controversial interview declaring his interest in a future return to Inter.

After just one season, he got his wish and returned to Inter Milan on loan.
