To speak of Don Salvador Reyes Monteón is, without a doubt, to speak of Guadalajara as a person in every sense of the word. The greatest idol in the history of Chivas left an indelible legacy as a player for his collective and individual achievements, building the legend of the Campeonísimo along with other players who wrote their names in golden letters in the history of the Rojiblanca.
However, it was on a day like today but in 2008 when Don 'Chava' lived an unforgettable chapter and at the same time set one more record to his unquestionable career with the Rebaño Sagrado. The Clausura tournament was about to begin that year, and the Chiverío was hosting Pumas at the Jalisco Stadium on Day 1 of that championship.
At that time, the club was celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first Campeonísimo title in the 1956-1957 season, and the setting of the match against the Universitarios was the perfect moment to commemorate it. Thus, in a well-deserved tribute, Guadalajara decided to register Reyes as part of the squad to see action on that match day 1.
On January 19, 2008, Don Salvador Reyes took the field at the Coloso de la Calzada Independencia in Efraín Flores' starting 11, wearing the number 57 in allusion to the celebration. And so it was that, for 55 seconds, the greatest Rojiblanco idol returned to action with the team he loved at the age of 71. With this, he also became the oldest player to have played minutes with Chivas.
After kicking off and touching the ball a couple of times, the electronic scoreboard was raised to indicate the change: Don 'Chava' Reyes, until then the institution's top goal scorer, was replaced by Omar Bravo. The entire Rojiblanco team lined up to bid farewell to the striker, who made way for someone who, a few years later, would take his place in the Rebaño's goal-scoring ranks.
That night, Chivas defeated Pumas 3-0 with goals from Sergio Santana, Sergio 'Gauchito' Ávila and Patricio Araujo, but those moments remain in the memory where, fortunately, we were able to see a Guadalajara legend one last time with the Rojiblanca.
