The 6 Huddersfield Town players likely to never play for the club again

Huddersfield Town will be playing League One football next season after a torrid campaign in the Championship.

The Terriers started the season reasonably well under Neil Warnock, but his departure looked to have a big impact on the club, as Darren Moore came in and was unable to improve things much.

He was then replaced by Andre Breitenreiter, who signed a two-and-a-half-year contract, but the German was unable to drag Huddersfield clear of the drop zone.

The Terriers will be back in the English third tier for the first time since the 2011/12 season, and like any team that suffers relegation, there will be a lot of dissecting of the squad, and players will be moved on either by the club’s choice or the fact they are too good to be in League One and will be picked up by Championship teams.

So, with that said, here we have looked at six Huddersfield players who are likely to never play for the club again…

Matty Pearson

Matty Pearson has been on the books at Huddersfield Town since the summer of 2021.

The centre-back joined the club on a free transfer after leaving Luton Town, and his importance with the Hatters continued with the Terriers.

In his first season with Huddersfield, Pearson was part of the defence that helped the club go all the way to the Championship play-offs.

Last season, the defender had a few injury concerns of his own, but when he was fit and available, he was a firm part of the defence once again.

As well as contributing at the back, Pearson also grabbed five goals as he helped the club beat relegation. But, given that the club has now been relegated and how well he has done in the Championship, Pearson could be someone that other second-tier sides look at to bolster their defensive options.

Yuta Nakayama

Huddersfield brought Yuta Nakayama to the club in the 2022 summer transfer window, costing the club nothing as he joined on a free transfer after leaving PEC Zwolle.

This was the defender’s first ever move to England, and his first season was a very slow and frustrating campaign.

Nakayama, who is a centre-back by trade but can operate in other areas, played just 14 times in the Championship last season.

However, his importance to the team has grown, as he’s featured in more games in this 2023/24 season.

However, he still hasn’t been a regular in the side, and with his contract expiring at the end of June, he may never play for the club again, as the Terriers may opt against renewing his contract.

Brahima Diarra

Brahima Diarra has been with Huddersfield for a number of years now, as he joined the club’s academy in 2019.

The midfielder worked his way up from the under-17s and under-19s to the B team and then the first team.

The 2022/23 campaign was Diarra’s breakthrough season, and even though he played 20 games and failed to score, he started to gain the attention of other teams around the Championship.

That noise hasn’t gone away, as Diarra has continued to play this season, and with his contract set to expire at the end of June, he could be soon departing the Terriers.

West Brom, Hull City, and Leicester City have been credited with an interest in the midfielder, and given the club’s situation, Diarra could look to move on, as these teams are likely to cement their interest more.

Jack Rudoni

Huddersfield’s relegation to League One could see them lose some key players, with possibly the most noticeable being Jack Rudoni.

Rudoni has only been with the Terriers for two seasons, but he has made a big impact since stepping up from League Two to the Championship.

Last season, the 22-year-old played in every league game, during which time he scored two goals and chipped in with five assists.

However, in this 2023/24 season, while Huddersfield has struggled, Rudoni has taken his game to a new level, and it may just mean that teams look to take a gamble on him and snap him up from the Terriers.

Rudoni is still under contract at the club until 2026, but you would assume that if a club came in with a decent offer, Huddersfield may have no choice but to let him go.

Josh Koroma

Josh Koroma is still under contract at Huddersfield until next summer, but given it will be his final 12 months and the fact he has done reasonably well this season, the Yorkshire side may look to cash in on Koroma while they can.

The 25-year-old signed a new contract last summer, but it may be unlikely that Koroma wants to stay and play in the third tier.

The winger has struggled at times with the Terriers, as he’s not been as prolific in front of goal as expected, but this season he has performed well, being one of the club’s top goalscorers.

Koroma may not turn out to be in as high demand as some of the other players, but he could be looked at by teams coming up from League One or teams who have been near the bottom end of the Championship this season.

Sorba Thomas

Sorba Thomas is probably the player most Huddersfield fans are expecting to leave the club right away.

The 25-year-old has been a sensational signing from Boreham Wood, and once again in this campaign, he has shown how good he can be.

The winger has been in sensational form in his creative side of the game, and despite being contracted to the club until 2026, he could be someone that is sold, as he will likely bring in a bit of money for the club.

Thomas was sensational for Huddersfield when they reached the play-offs a few seasons ago, but for some reason he was sent out on loan to Blackburn Rovers last season. He returned and again showed why he probably should have been kept at the club under Warnock last term.

It is unlikely that Thomas will want to stick around in League One next season, so he could be a departure that is expected and one that would give the club some significant funds.
