The relationship between FC Barcelona and Marc-Andre Ter Stegen has been severely strained in recent weeks. Now no longer a captain either, the German goalkeeper remains in a tense situation with the club. However, it seems that he has finally decided to speak up.
On his official Instagram account, the 33-year-old Barcelona veteran spoke about the recent controversies and decided to comment on certain topics and address them to the best of his abilities.
Starting off, he spoke about the recent months and how difficult they have been for him physically and on a personal level:
“These past few months have been particularly difficult for me, both physically and personally. Like any player, after suffering an injury, my sole priority has always been to return to the pitch as soon as possible, motivated only by the desire to help the team and do what I love most: compete.”
However, he also spoke about the negative information and rumours that have spread related to him:
“In recent weeks, many things have been said about me – some of them entirely unfounded. Therefore, I feel it is necessary to express my version of events respectfully, yet clearly.”
Moreover, he also stated that the decision to undergo surgery was taken with the club’s approval and that the recovery time he announced himself was one that experts had shared with him:
“The decision to undergo surgery was made after consultation with medical professionals and fully approved by the Club, and always with the intention of prioritizing my health and long-term sporting career, which of course are fully aligned with those of FCB to have myself available on the pitch as soon as possible to keep winning trophies. Moreover, I announced publicly the minimum recovery timing that I shall need after that, which had been communicated to me by most reputed experts and always in coordination with the Club.”
As for the whole debacle related to player registrations, Ter Stegen made it clear that signings were brought in even before he was ever going to undergo surgery:
“I would also like to clarify – in light of certain speculation – that all of the Club’s signings and contract renewals were completed prior to my surgery, and therefore, at no point could I consider that my unfortunate circumstances with the new surgery I had to undergo would be necessary for the registration of other colleagues whom I greatly respect and look forward to share locker room with for many seasons. Any alternative interpretation seems both unfair and inaccurate to me.”
The former Barcelona captain also decided to highlight his commitment to the club and how that commitment remains absolute even today, despite all the tension:
“Throughout my career, I have always tried to conduct myself with professionalism, respect, and commitment towards the Badges I have represented. I have a deep affection for FC Barcelona, this city, and its supporters, who have stood by me for so many years. My commitment to these colors remains absolute.”
Yet, before concluding his recent statement, Ter Stegen made it clear that he remains open to finding a resolution that can please every party involved:
I understand that difficult moments can generate tension, but I trust that, through dialogue and responsibility, we can resolve this situation constructively. I am fully willing to collaborate with the Club’s management to resolve this matter and to provide the requested authorization.”
As for the conclusion of the statement, the Barça veteran directed it towards fans of the club:
“A lot may have changed, but one thing will never will: I love you, Culers.”
This recent statement is a significant one, and possibly one that could have other repercussions or discussions following it. As of right now, tensions remain high, and it seems that Ter Stegen has tried to clarify his point of view.
