Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer is looking forward to today’s Euro 2024 clash against Italy which will pit him against his Inter Milan teammates.

The 35-year-old remains a stalwart for his national team at the age of 35. He also cemented himself as the Nerazzurri’s Number One between the sticks after making the move from Bayern Munich last summer.

The custodian helped his nation secure the second spot in Group A, finishing right behind Germany. This set up a meeting with the Azzurri who also finished as their group’s runners-up, albeit in a more dramatic fashion.

Therefore, Sommer will be defending Switzerland’s goal against the defending European champions. This much-anticipated tilt will be the opening fixture of the Round of 16.

This will be a special occasion for the former FC Basel man who will take on his club teammates. This includes the likes of Nicolo Barella, Alessandro Bastoni and Matteo Darmian.

The Nerazzurri goalkeeper expressed his excitement about the notion.

“During the tournament, I’ve been speaking with my Inter teammates,” said the Switzerland international in his pre-match press conference via FcInterNews.

“Each of us will be fighting for his nation, but I’m happy to meet them.

“I don’t know how many saves I will have to make. But a defensive performance at the top of our capabilities will be necessary to advance.”

Sommer also touched on the change of personnel in the Inter goalkeeping department.

The club opted against maintaining Emil Audero on a permanent basis, while Genoa’s Josep Martinez will imminently sign for the Nerazzurri.

“I saw that we no longer have Emil Audero, so we needed a new goalkeeper, and rightly so.

“Now I’m only focused on the European Championship and my head will return to Inter once the tournament is over.”
