Can the Lionesses continue their Euros title defence?

Sweden vs England LIVE!

Vídeos OneFootball

Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses will continue their Euros title defence tonight as they meet Sweden in Zurich. England wobbled in their first group stage game, slow to start as they fell to a surprise defeat at the hands of France, but rallied back into contention with a comfortable four-goal win over the Netherlands and a 6-1 rout of Wales.

Those results were in stark contrast to England’s faltering start, and Wiegman will hope they set the tone for the knockout rounds. Sweden will be no pushovers, though. The Blågult are in the hunt for a second Euros title and their first since 1984. They have started well towards that end, conceding only once as they took all nine points available in the group stage with wins over Denmark, Germany, and Poland.

If tonight’s match is a question of momentum, it could go either way. It will be a tight contest either way as England return to the Stadion Letzigrund for the third time this summer. Follow the game LIVE below with our dedicated match blog, featuring expert insight and analysis from Simon Collings.

Wiegman expects a tough evening

Sarina Wiegman spoke to BBC Sport to preview the tie.

On choosing not to change the squad: “Consistency helps, gave structure, we had two good performances so there was no reason to chance.”

On Sweden’s strengths: “We look at it all the time, the opponents’ strength and what we need to do. We have that in the other matches too that we played. We take that into consideration and put the best team on the pitch.”

On where Sweden will keep England busy: “Everyone will be busy on the pitch tonight, its a very competitive, high-level game. I don’t expect anyone to have an easy night tonight.”

Leah Williamson speaks ahead of kick-off

England captain Leah Williamson previews the tie.

On the mood in the dressing room: “I think there’s a good balance of relaxed and the right level of anxiousness that comes with being nervous and excited.”

On stepping up their level in the knockout stage: “Fortunately for us we have had high-stakes games coming into knockout games, which are different anyway. They are in great form but we’re on great form.”

On Sweden’s threats: “We are prepared for every part of Sweden, so let’s hope we have what we need.”

What awaits in the next round?

Tonight’s winner will face Italy in the Euro 2025 semi-final.

The Azzurri beat Norway last night by way of a 90th-minute winner from 35-year-old captain Cristiana Girelli, who completed her brace after the tie was left goalless at halftime.

It is their best performance at the Euros since 1997.

"It's incredible, beautiful. In front of all these people, so many messages arrived from Italy the last few days," Italy head coach Andrea Soncin said.

"It's something fantastic. I think this is the biggest gift we can give to all those who watch us, to all those little girls, those young women who live football with passion."

The semi-final will be held in Geneva on July 22.

What to make of this England XI

England are unchanged. Again. Hate to say I told you so.

To be fair, this squad led Wales 4-0 at halftime last week. If it ain’t broke...

Jess Park and Beth Mead were first off the bench last time out, so keep an eye out for them. The exciting young Chelsea striker Aggie Beever-Jones could also feature.

If there is any one player to be keeping your eye on here, it is Lauren James. She has been the talisman, the creative outlet of the tournament so far.

Team news, coming soon

We should have team news in just a few minutes.

Will we see any surprises from Wiegman?

A memorable goal in a previous tie

If you can cast your mind all the way back to 2022, you will remember that this exact tie spawned a star of the women’s game. Does the name Alessia Russo ring any bells?

If not, it should. Way back when, as England were en route to their maiden Euros honour, Russo, then of Manchester United, came off the bench and scored the goal of the tournament with an audacious backheel.

Nutmegging the keeper to go three goals clear in a Euros semi-final? Not a bad day’s work...

Standard Sport's Simon Collings previews Sweden vs England

After scoring 10 goals in their past two games, the mood around England’s bid to retain their European crown has shifted dramatically.

An opening defeat to France had put Sarina Wiegman’s side on the back foot and under immense pressure, but the Lionesses responded in emphatic fashion by dismantling the Netherlands and Wales.

There is now a growing sense that, after a shaky start, England are finding form at the right time and they are full of confidence going into Thursday’s quarter-final against Sweden.

“We’re a very talented team, a lot of technical ability, tactics, all that comes with it,” said defender Lucy Bronze. “But we don’t want to ever forget that we are England, we are proper England, and if push comes to shove, we can win a game by any means possible.”

Sweden may well require a different type of performance from the Lionesses.
