Swansea City manager Luke Williams confirmed he will travel to the Netherlands at the weekend, as he searches for alternatives to Wycombe's Joe Low.

Swansea City manager, Luke Williams, is set to jet out to the Netherlands this weekend to scout a new central defender.

This comes after negotiations with Wycombe Wanderers for Joe Low hit a stumbling block, forcing the Championship outfit to look elsewhere. The Swans have seen two bids in the region of £500,000 and £600,000 rejected, as the Chairboys remain adamant that their star man won't leave the club this January.

The failure to progress negotiations has seen Williams tell Wales Online that he will fly to the Netherlands over the weekend to search for alternatives to his number one target. The 44-year-old is understood to be casting his eye on two new centre-back options, as the Welsh club is keen to shore up their defence as soon as possible.

The Swansea boss has made his admiration of the 22-year-old no secret this January, revealing him as a player they had their eye on early in the window. Despite this, Wycombe's stance on their towering defender has remained that he isn't for sale.

After Matt Bloomfield's shock departure on Tuesday, the promotion-chasing side will be keen not to let any more faces leave Adams Park in the next two weeks. This revelation has seen Williams drop the bomb that he will head out to the Netherlands over the weekend to take a look at two new defensive targets.

The Swans gaffer told Wales Online: "This one's not completely down to us now. The manager's left, and it means some business has to be done on their end before they move on a key player or even talk about moving on a key player.

"If you're going into that club [Wycombe] now, or interviewing for that job, as a potential head coach or manager, I'm pretty sure you'd want to have a say on what happens with Joe Low.

"He's been a top, top performer for them. A top performer for the level and they're going very well. You're going to want to know what's going on there.

"We have a game on the Tuesday, and I fly to Europe on Sunday to watch a player. Then come back and prepare for the next game. I'm flying to the Netherlands."

Bloomfield's departure makes Low deal less likely

Swansea aren't the only club keen on the towering Welshman, as both Plymouth Argyle and Preston North End have registered interest in securing his services this January. However, the goings-on at the Buckinghamshire club this week will certainly halt any thought of selling Low.

As Williams alluded to, Wycombe have got plenty of work to do behind the scenes after Bloomfield left for Luton Town on Tuesday, so negotiating the transfer of one of their most important players will understandably be bottom of their priority list currently. Whilst this news will come as a massive boost for Chairboys fans, who have had a pretty rough week, this will certainly be a setback for the Welsh club.

With their south Wales derby against Cardiff City coming up on Saturday, it's touch and go whether star defensive duo Harry Darling and Ben Cabango will be fit enough to feature. With Cyrus Christie and Kyle Naughton potentially having to form a makeshift backline, Swansea will be kicking themselves that they were unable to get a deal over the line for Low.

Reports suggested Wycombe set out their valuation of the player, and the Swans didn't meet it with either of their formal bids. With the success of the Chairboys this season and how integral Low has been, it would be very hard to see them budging on this asking price. Now the manager has left, there are far more pressing concerns than selling Low, hence Williams' decision to head to the Netherlands to assess alternative options.
