This morning the Marseille police confirmed that they have arrested one of the Atalanta BC fans accused of performing Nazi salutes and doing monkey chants during their Europa League semi-final against Olympique de Marseille (1-1).

The Marseille police were active on Twitter last night as they asked for any fans who had witnessed these acts of racism in the away stands to “immediately” come forward and contact the Bouches-du-Rhône police department.

This has not been the first time Atalanta fans have been accused of racism. Last year, against Juventus, Dušan Vlahović (24) was the target of racist chants, resulting in a partial stadium closure for the club. While in 2022, Atalanta were fined €12,000 after their supporters subjected the Fiorentina owner to racist abuse.

Nor has this been the first time that Marseille have been the target of this kind of abuse. Earlier in the season Olympique Lyonnais fans were caught doing Nazi salutes and making monkey gestures towards the Marseille fans.
