Liam Rosenior's name will be on the minds of a fair few EFL teams who are trying to find their next head coach, over the summer period, one of which will be Sunderland.

The former Hull City boss was unexpectedly relieved of his duties at the MKM Stadium. He'd been nominated for the Championship Manager of the Season award, but the decision to get rid of Rosenior, 39, who was also with the Tigers during his playing days, was down to his team's style of play.

He had a lot of good players to work with too, including the likes of Jaden Philogene, Jacob Greaves and Fabior Carvalho - for the latter portion of the season in the case of the Liverpool loanee - but he wasn't able to guide them into the play-offs.

Since he was available, clubs with major dugout vacancies have approached the young coach. Plymouth Argyle and Birmingham City have both had their proposals to Rosenior rejected, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

Nixon believes that the ex-Hull manager is on Sunderland's list of targets. They have been without a head coach since Michael Beale left the club in mid-February.

Football League World's Black Cats fan pundit, Jack Austwicke, has provided his two cents on whether his club should be pursuing the 39-year-old.

Sunderland fan verdict on Liam Rosenior

The former Hull boss should not be the preferred choice of Sunderland, according to Austwicke, but he can understand the merits that he would bring to the club.

"I think Rosenior would be a good option," said FLW's Black Cats fan pundit. "I'd probably take him at Sunderland at the minute. He probably could have done better with the whole team - they probably should have got into the play-offs - but that didn't work out.

"But I still think that he did very well there considering where he started, and I think he's a good manager. But I'm still not sure whether I'd have him over Will Still, which I'm pretty confident is going to happen at this point.

"It is hard to say. Rosenior has got the Championship experience, which is definitely valuable, and I don't think he's going to be short of options; the reports are that he's already turned down Plymouth. So I think he'll be in good stead no matter where he goes."

Sunderland have less pressure to get a move on with managerial decision

Despite the plans to appoint a new head coach soon after the end of the season, and the fact that there was reported confidence in the fact that they would do so, the name of the person that will take over from Mike Dodds is still unknown.

There are other candidates besides Rosenior who have been linked with filling the current dugout void. Still, who Austwicke mentioned as his preferred option, and former Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom have been mentioned as options that have taken Sunderland's interest.

Then there is the slightly more left-field shouts of Bo Svensson (Mainz head coach) and Rene Maric (Bayern Munich under-19s coach), although the former has been linked with becoming the next Union Berlin boss.

The main worry for clubs in a similar position to the Black Cats is that they will struggle to properly start their recruitment until the new manager is in place. Sunderland don't have to worry about that, because their transfer choices don't often involve the head coach anyway. They just want them to work with the players that they are given.

There are, of course, issues with this model, but it does mean that they should be able to steam ahead with acquiring players even though they don't have a boss of the team.
