According to the Sunderland Echo, Sunderland have received interest in Hume but there have not been any bids for the Northern Ireland international despite reports claiming that Galatasaray had fielded a £7m transfer offer.

Hume has made 84 appearances across all competitions for Sunderland since signing from Linfield in January 2022 and appeared in all of the Mackems' 46 Championship fixtures last term as they finished in 16th position.

The 22-year-old has admirers in Napoli, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Leicester City and Sunderland's divisional rivals Leeds United, as per a previous report from the Belfast Telegraph, although Sunderland are still said to be awaiting offerings from any of Hume's interested parties.

Update given on Sunderland's Trai Hume situation amid Galatasaray claim

The latest report will no doubt be a relief for Sunderland supporters, but it seems likely that clubs will begin to stump up offers deeper into the window and Sunderland may face a real battle to keep Hume at the Stadium of Light beyond August.

The report adds that Linfield will be due 15% of any fee over £150,000 that Sunderland collect for Hume.

However, there are contrasting reports with Hume, and it's been claimed by Sports Illustrated journalist Michael Graham that Sunderland are holding out for an offer of £10m before they consider a summer sale.

It's yet to be seen whether clubs will meet the Mackems' hefty asking price later on in the window, which could see them retain Hume for at least another season.

Sunderland must fend off Trai Hume transfer interest

Sunderland are in a position where they have the luxury of being able to play hardball and operate on their own terms, as Hume's current contract doesn't expire until 2027. They're in no real rush to sell just yet and it's not clear if Hume even wants to leave, and they need to make sure it stays that way.

Hume will almost certainly be a top-flight player in the future and he serves as a strong example of Sunderland's ability to identify, recruit and cultivate young, low-cost talent into major profit further down the line.

In terms of right-backs, he's something of a throwback as he doesn't operate with the same attacking thrust as other young positional compatriots who've broken through in the division in recent years such as Max Aarons and Djed Spence, for example, but he's defensively outstanding, strong in the tackle and reads the game as well as anyone.

They're outstanding qualities to possess at such a young age and the likelihood is that he's going to get even better too, and Sunderland could reap the rewards of that if they fight off all interest and refuse to entertain any bids this summer. Every player ultimately has a price and Sunderland, as a Championship club, could find certain proposals difficult to turn down but they would benefit from rejecting everything that comes their way unless it's a "silly offer".

Despite reportedly setting an asking price of £10m, Sunderland should still reject offers of that value that come their way for the time being, with Hume only set to improve further over the coming seasons.
