Xhaka is the latest player on their list. The Swiss international is being targeted to bring experience and control to the heart of their team.

Talks have begun between Sunderland and Leverkusen over a possible €10 million deal. These discussions have been led by Sunderland’s owner, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus.

The player has been offered a three-year contract. Sunderland hope their proposal is enough to beat off competition from other clubs.

Xhaka could return to the Premier League

Saudi Pro League outfit Neom FC and Serie A club AC Milan are monitoring Xhaka’s situation.

Xhaka is no stranger to English football. He spent several years at Arsenal before moving to the Bundesliga.

The midfielder has played a key role in Leverkusen’s progress. He was a central figure in the team that won the Bundesliga in 2023/24.

Sunderland believe Xhaka’s top-level experience could be vital in helping them stay in the Premier League. His leadership would be a significant boost for manager Regis Le Bris.

Xhaka still has time remaining on his deal in Germany, but Leverkusen may be open to a sale if they receive a suitable offer.

The 31-year-old’s decision is expected soon, as Sunderland aim to conclude the deal before the season starts.

Sunderland’s ambition this summer has been clear. Signing Xhaka would underline their intent to make a serious impact in the top flight.
