Sunderland could land a Premier League-ready gem in Tommy Doyle as they prepare for life without Jobe Bellingham in the top flight.
Following their dramatic 2-1 victory against Sheffield United in the Championship play-off final, Sunderland are preparing for life back in the Premier League.
With Borussia Dortmund confident regarding the possibility of signing Jobe Bellingham, the Black Cats are now required to replace one of their key men, alongside continuing to strengthen Regis Le Bris' squad as the club looks ahead to their first Premier League campaign since 2016/17.
New links are emerging that Sunderland are keen on forgotten Wolves man Tommy Doyle, who would be available for just £3m - A snip.
After the January transfer window, it was reported by Alan Nixon on Patreon that Sunderland viewed Doyle as a potential long-term replacement for Bellingham, with there being uncertainty at the time surrounding his future.
Now, with the youngster set to follow in the footsteps of his brother Jude and make the move to Borussia Dortmund, Doyle would be a great option for Regis Le Bris.
Following a successful loan spell at Sheffield United in the 2022/23 campaign, Doyle joined Wolves on loan from Manchester City in the summer of 2023.
After a positive opening year in Old Gold, the club opted to purchase the midfielder permanently for a reported £4.3 million fee despite him not nailing down a spot as a regular starter.
However, this time around, throughout a turbulent campaign at Molineux, Doyle has made 24 appearances in the Premier League. However, he notched up just 476 minutes, largely due to the quality of Andre and Joao Gomes' pairing being a huge factor in the club's turnaround under Vitor Pereira.
With both the physicality of Joao Gomes and Andre considered, alongside the January additions of Emmanuel Agbadbou and Marshall Munetsi, Doyle has unfortunately been on the wrong end of a switch to a much more physical outlook under Pereira.
He has also been utilised sporadically as an attacking midfielder since the manager's arrival. However, Doyle has been unable to land a regular starting place.
Doyle's uncertain future is most certainly not for a lack of quality, and the potential resurfacing of his Sunderland links would be hugely beneficial for both player and club.
Similar to Bellingham, Doyle can operate in a variety of positions in the middle of the park, and this versatility would be useful for Le Bris as he looks to bring in a long-term replacement for his midfield.
A flexible midfielder, Doyle is a fantastic controller of games. Always looking to get on the ball and make things happen, the 23-year-old is the central tempo-setter when relied upon.
With a high ceiling in terms of technical qualities, Doyle, who earns £10k-a-week at Molineux, also carries two years of Premier League experience that could prove vital for a Sunderland side returning to the top flight.
While the Manchester City academy graduate hasn't been able to kick on at Molineux as imagined, he would be a valuable asset for any club interested in securing his signature over the summer months.
With Doyle and Wolves set for crunch talks heading into the summer, Sunderland would be a fantastic option for the young midfielder.
It has sadly turned into a case of right move-wrong time for Doyle at Wolves. However, at 23 years of age, his best years are still ahead of him. If he were to become a regular, he has the tools to become a reliable Premier League midfielder and a fantastic controller of games.
Should Borussia Dortmund receive the reported £33.7 million fee from Borussia Dortmund for Jobe Bellingham, Tommy Doyle should be at the top of the club's list heading into the summer.
