Sunderland have turned their attention to RB Leipzig striker Lois Openda as they continue to strengthen their squad (h/t Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg.
The Black Cats are closing in on a deal for Chelsea’s Marc Guiu, but are now showing interest in signing another striker this summer.
Openda, a 25-year-old Belgium international, has also attracted interest from Aston Villa. They could move for him if Ollie Watkins leaves the club.
Sunderland believe Openda can add a cutting edge to their attack and help boost their survival hopes in the Premier League.
His pace, sharp movement, and experience in European football make him a valuable option for any team.
Leipzig could lose two of their top stars this summer, with Benjamin Sesko and Xavi Simons attracting offers from the Premier League.
Manchester United and Newcastle have been linked with Sesko, while Chelsea are making strong efforts to bring Simons to Stamford Bridge.
If either of those players leaves, Leipzig may be unwilling to sanction another exit in the same transfer window.
That puts a potential move for Openda in doubt, as Leipzig would be reluctant to lose three key attackers in one summer.
Openda enjoyed a strong campaign last season, finishing with 13 goals and 11 assists in all competitions.
Manager Regis Le Bris is keen to add players who can handle pressure and deliver consistently in the final third.
Sunderland’s ambition this summer shows they are serious about avoiding a relegation battle next season.
