Steven Davis, a revered figure at Rangers, has recently expressed openness to returning to the club in a coaching capacity, potentially as an assistant to Steven Gerrard. While no formal discussions have taken place, Davis’s comments have fueled speculation about a possible reunion with Gerrard at Ibrox.

In a recent interview, Davis stated, “At this moment in time it’s only rumours. I haven’t heard anything else,” acknowledging the speculation linking him with a coaching role under a new Rangers boss. He added, “Obviously the club are going through the process in terms of who they are going to appoint as manager. If the opportunity comes up it’s obviously a club that’s very close to my heart, so let’s see what happens in the next few weeks” (source).

Davis’s deep connection with Rangers is well-documented. He had two spells at the club as a player, making a total of 239 appearances. In October 2023, he briefly served as interim manager following Michael Beale’s departure, overseeing a Europa League defeat by Aris Limassol and a league win over St Mirren before Philippe Clement’s appointment (Ibrox Noise article).

Currently part of Michael O’Neill’s coaching staff with Northern Ireland, Davis is also pursuing his UEFA A Diploma, indicating his commitment to a future in coaching. He remarked, “I’m going through this process of development and being in with Michael (O’Neill) and the staff has been great. I’m not desperate to go in somewhere and take something that’s not right. I’m quite happy to wait for the right opportunity, something that I really want to stick my teeth into” (source).

The prospect of Gerrard returning to Rangers has been a topic of discussion, with reports suggesting he is a leading candidate for the managerial position. Gerrard previously managed Rangers from 2018 to 2021, leading the club to an undefeated Scottish Premiership title in the 2020/21 season. His potential return, possibly alongside Davis, has been described as a “win-win” scenario by former teammate Didi Hamann (Ibrox Noise article).

And fan reaction? Well, it’s been mixed. While many still adore Gerrard, some are cautious about going backwards. But with Davis involved, that sentiment could soften – his legacy and credibility remain intact at Ibrox (Ibrox Noise fan poll).
