Steve Bruce is back making headlines.

The unemployed manager speaking to the media this week.

Coming out with some ‘interesting’ claims about what has happened in the past.

Then coincidentally, also mentioning that he is still available for work, if anybody wants to employ him.

Steve Bruce unable to get another job in management, since having been sacked by West Brom 19 months ago back in October 2022, leaving the Baggies in a desperate state.

That coming only 12 months after having been sacked by Newcastle United, leaving them in a desperate state.

A bit of a pattern building up here…

Anyway, with his comments this week, I have spotted another patter regarding Steve Bruce, that just a cursory search has found many previous cases.

As well as having been a genius as a manager, Steve Bruce apparently also brilliant as a talent spotter, but the most unlucky man in the world as well it appears when reality is that none of these players actually signed for him…

Steve Bruce speaking about Ebereche Eze and Michael Olise – 15 May 2024:

“I took the two of them to Newcastle [when I was managing there] but they both decided that they wanted to stay in London.”

Steve Bruce speaking back in September 2023:

“When I was at Newcastle we tried to sign Moises Caicedo for £4.5million and I remember thinking what a good player he was… now he’s gone on to become the British record transfer fee for £115million, but he is a top, top player.”

Steve Bruce talking about Virgil Van Dijk who in 2018 Liverpool bought for £75m – 13 September 2019:

“Virgil van Dijk: wow, what a player.

“We all know how good Liverpool are up front but signing him and the keeper Alisson gave Liverpool the backbone they needed, just took them to the next level.

“I could have taken him [Van Dijk] to Hull.”

Steve Bruce talking about Andy Carroll, less than two months after Carroll joined Liverpool for £35m – 16 March 2011:

“When I was Wigan manager, he came on against us and scored with ten minutes to go.

“I rang Newcastle on the Monday morning and they quoted me £4.5m. I seriously thought about it but in the end, we could only go to £2.5m.”
