Real Madrid’s defensive woes this season have been impossible to ignore, and what is perhaps most shocking is the club is inability to keep the Santiago Bernabeu as the fortress it once was.

Historically, the Madrid stadium has been a place where opponents fear to tread, but this season, that reputation has all but crumbled.

To put things in perspective, in their last six matches at the Bernabeu, Real Madrid have conceded 12 goals, averaging two goals per game.

This marks a sharp decline in their defensive solidity, with the most recent example coming in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg against Arsenal, where they conceded two goals.

In fact, the last team to leave the Bernabeu without scoring was Girona, almost two months ago on February 23. Since then, every visiting team has found a way to break through Madrid’s defence, and it’s starting to become a serious concern.

A look at the worrying trend

In the Champions League, Real Madrid’s struggles were evident in their ties against Atletico Madrid and Arsenal.

The first leg against Atletico saw them concede one goal, but the return leg against Arsenal was even worse, with two goals finding the back of the net.

Similarly, in the Copa del Rey, Real Sociedad produced a stunning attacking display, firing 11 shots at Madrid’s goal, five of which were on target. They scored four goals, further exposing Madrid’s vulnerabilities at home.

In La Liga, the defensive crisis has continued. Real Madrid have conceded five goals in their last three matches at the Bernabeu, with one goal coming from Rayo Vallecano, and two each from Leganes and Valencia.

To make matters worse, in 2025, Real Madrid have only managed to keep a clean sheet in five out of 28 matches. This is a far cry from last season, when they kept a clean sheet in 25 of their 55 matches.

Their current defensive record, coupled with 12 defeats in all competitions this year, paints a worrying picture for a club accustomed to dominating at home.
