Southampton have sacked manager Russell Martin after Sunday’s chastening 5-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, a result which leaves them rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table.

The defeat was Southampton’s 13th in 16 league games this season, with all five goals let in during the disastrous first half at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

With the club facing a gruelling relegation dogfight, the decision was made to end Martin’s 18-month tenure.

Southampton acknowledged Martin’s challenges but insisted on the need for immediate improvement.

“Going into the start of the season, we all knew the challenges of readjusting to life in the Premier League,” the statement read.

“However, the reality of our situation is clear, and despite our support for Russell, results need to improve urgently.

“We are deeply grateful for the continued support and positivity of our fans. Your passion, even in the toughest of times, drives our commitment to the club’s long-term success.”

The club also reflected on Martin’s contributions, notably last season’s Championship play-off triumph, thanking him and his staff for the dedication shown.

Southampton have appointed under-21s manager Simon Rusk as interim manager while they search for a permanent replacement.

The club remains optimistic about the future, citing the development of young talent as one of the sources of strength and pride.

This decision came on the same day Wolves dismissed Gary O’Neil after a fourth straight defeat in the Premier League.
