Besiktas have emerged as new transfer admirers for Yukinari Sugawara but they are willing to pay only £4.3m for him which is half of what Napoli were reportedly willing to offer.
There's a saying in European football, once one hears too much club loyalty from a player, he is likely to leave soon. And needless to say, in a divided dressing room like Southampton's, it is seen time and again.
Well, nothing against Ramsdale, yet the keeper's recent over efforts have made it clear, that this season will be his last as a Saints player. But, that's not all, as he is accompanied by backline member Yukinari Sugawara.
Remember how just weeks ago, Sugawara had denied making a switch post-relegation? But, see his promise break down in pieces now.
While, days ago, Sugawara had been linked with a Napoli move, now, the Japanese seems even more likely to leave the Saints given another club, Besiktas FC, has joined his transfer race.
Still, the defender's departure rumours aren't the intriguing part. Instead what actually is that Sugawara can now depart St. Mary's for less than half the fee, Napoli had tipped for him.
According to a report from Fotospor, Turkish giants Besiktas are linked with Sugawara but the club remains firm not to exceed their £4.3m budget for the full-back.
And here’s the kicker, Southampton bought him for £6m. So if this deal happens, it’ll be another financial loss, but are fans really surprised by this meagre offer?
Similar to most of the Southampton players, Sugawara has had a season to forget, and selling him demands a cut-price dent in the club's pocket. And if not for that, just see the suitors. It's scrooge spender Besiktas.
Famously, the Turkish club's rigid budgets have seen them turn away from Saints forward Paul Onuachu's deal multiple times. Well, who knows, it's to repeat with his teammate Sugawara now?
Clearly, in Southampton's situation, the best option remains to wait. Maybe a Napoli-like offer will arrive again.
