It has emerged in recent days that Leon King’s move to Wycombe Wanderers broke down after the Rangers defender decided against the move and elected to stay at Ibrox.
This attracted a strong reaction from Rangers fans, most of whom believe he will not make it at the club and really should move on. But the real reason King stayed has been accused of being related to one thing – £8,000. Football Insider reported that the deal collapsed despite a fee being agreed, suggesting King’s decision ultimately killed the move.
That’s roughly what he earns per week, and many fans accept he’d have received a lot less at Wycombe. Who, realistically, would want to give that up? The truth is that Rangers’ board have mismanaged funds so consistently that King is well within his rights to benefit from it. Ibrox Noise previously highlighted this exact situation, drawing attention to the financial motivation that underpins many of these stalled exits.
Meanwhile, Alex Lowry did choose to take the plunge. He clearly values his career trajectory over immediate earnings, and was prepared to step down a level in both club stature and wage to get back on the pitch.
Lowry clearly values his career more than his bank balance. He knew he was done at Ibrox and took the hit to get playing again.
That’s the contrast. Some players will take the cut to move forward. Others won’t.
Fans always want honourable players driven by passion and integrity. But these lads are human. They care about money too.
Neither choice – King staying or Lowry going – deserves abuse. Everyone’s different. Everyone would make a different call.
But at the heart of it, this is down to years of financial missteps by the board. The club is still cutting cloth – and that may continue for a while yet.
