Manchester United are among a host of clubs keeping tabs on Xavi Simons’ situation with RB Leipzig.

It was confirmed this week that the young starlet, hailed by ex-manager Marco Rose as a ‘difference-maker’, has decided to leave the club this summer in hopes of plying his trade in an all-new environment.

Leipzig are expected to demand a fee in the region of €80 million (£67.2m) to sanction his exit, with Bayern Munich, United and several other Premier League sides in the race.

Simons worked his way through the ranks of Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy before moving to Paris Saint-Germain in 2019 without making his senior bow for the Blaugrana.

He was then sold to PSV Eindhoven after three years in Paris, after which he oversaw a career-best campaign, scoring 22 goals and assisting a further 11 in 48 appearances for the Eredivisie outfit. Such scintillating form prompted PSG to activate his buy-back clause, although they then loaned him straight to Leipzig rather than allowing him the chance to showcase his abilities in the first team.

The Netherlands international has now spent two seasons in Germany, notching a total of 43 goal contributions in 75 matches. In January, Leipzig forked out £42m – while pledging an additional £21m in add-ons – to make his transfer permanent.

The latest on Simons’ transfer demands

According to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Simons has his sights set on playing Champions League football wherever he moves, which, of course, United can only offer if they seal qualification by winning the Europa League next Wednesday.

After putting pen to paper on his two-and-a-half-year deal with Die Roten Bullen, Simons became the highest-paid player in the club’s history at just 21 years old. The fee they paid for him is also the highest they’ve ever spent on a signing, so you can understand them wanting to make their money’s worth when he inevitably departs.
